Preparing For The Village Feast Season

May marks the official start of Malta’s village feast season, a time when the islands’ streets are transformed by ornate banners, brass bands, & the unmistakable sound or murtali (fireworks) echoing across the valleys. While the religious celebrations are the core of these events, the success of the outdoor festivities remains entirely at the mercy of the elements.

For those attending a festa in May, the weather is often at its most pleasant. Daytime highs reach a comfortable 24°C, but as the sun sets, the temperature typically drops to around 15°C.

This 10° dip is significant for anyone planning to stay for the late-night fireworks. While the afternoon sun might suggest summer has arrived, the evening air remains crisp. Furthermore, relative humidity begins its seasonal climb, often reaching 70% by late evening. This moisture can make the air feel cooler than the thermometer suggests, particularly in coastal villages.

While rain is rare in May – averaging only 3 rain days for the entire month – wind is the primary concern for festa organisers. In particular, the Grigal (Northeast wind) is the traditional “festa-spoiler”.

A strong Grigal can reach speeds that make the traditional murtali & blalen (firework shells) unsafe to launch. Because many of Malta’s historic village cores, such as Lija or Żebbuġ, are surrounded by open farmland or valleys, even a moderate breeze can carry debris toward spectators or residential areas. For the pyrotechnic teams, a calm May night isn’t just a preference; it is a safety requirement.

If you are heading to a festa this month, the “Festa Forecast” suggests a simple strategy:

  • Layer Up: Wear light clothing for the afternoon procession, but bring a jacket for the 11PM fireworks.
  • Watch The Wind: Check the local wind direction. A South/Southwest wind usually guarantees clear, calm conditions for pyrotechnics, whereas a North/Northeast wind (the Grigal) may lead to delays or cancellations of the high-altitude displays.

Whether you are there for the religious heritage or the spectacular aerial displays, May offers the perfect atmospheric balance to experience Malta’s culture before the intense heat of summer takes hold.
