As June draws to a close, the Maltese islands prepare to celebrate one of their oldest, most deeply cherished national feasts: l-Imnarja. Commemorating the martyrdom of Saint Peter & Saint Paul on the 29th of June, this traditional agricultural festival traces its roots back to the rule of the knights of St. John. Historically, it is a celebration of light, folklore, & the land. From a meteorological perspective, it aligns almost perfectly with the peak solar radiation of late June, serving as a cultural marker for the true onset of midsummer.
Following the summer solstice on June 21st, the earth tilts closest to the sun in our hemisphere. In Malta, this drives the UV indeed to a dangerous peak of 10. Cloud cover drops to its absolute annual low of just 4% to 7%, meaning there is virtually zero atmospheric buffer to block the sun’s rays. It is under this intense, brilliant light that the agricultural community gathers at Buskett Gardens to showcase their finest livestock, locally grown produce, & traditional folk singing (għana).
Buskett Gardens, located near Dingli, provides a fascinating study in microclimates during this peak summer period. As one of the few genuinely wooded areas on the island, its deep valley geography & dense canopy of citrus & pine trees create a unique atmospheric haven. While the open limestone plains of central Malta radiate intense heat during the day, the geography of Buskett catches the cooler air as it settles into the valley at dusk.
This unique cooling effect explains why the historic tradition of overnight picnicking became so popular. Centuries ago, before modern refrigeration or home cooling, families would travel from all corners of the island to spend the eve of the 29th sleeping under the trees at Buskett, enjoying traditional rabbit stews in an environment that felt significantly cooler than their stone houses.
Today, while the air temperature drops to a refreshing 18°C in the heart of the gardens overnight, the daytime festivities remain hot. If you are planning to experience the vibrant colours, music, & heritage of l-Imnarja this year, come prepared for the midsummer sun. Keep well-hydrated, seek the natural shade of the groves, & appreciate how our ancestors cleverly used Malta’s natural topography to find comfort during the hottest days of the year.
