Malta’s Top Ten Beach & Water Safety Tips

Every summer, the island’s beaches fill up fast, & so does the list of avoidable mishaps. Water safety here is mostly common sense, but it is common sense tuned to this island: its winds, its rocky coasts & its occasional drifting jellyfish.

The Mediterranean around Malta is legendary for its crystal-clear turquoise waters & inviting temperatures, drawing locals & tourists alike to the shore as soon as the weather warms. However, enjoying this coastal paradise safely requires understanding the unique geography, climate, & marine life of the Maltese islands. Here are ten essential tips, learnt the local way, so you only make new mistakes.

When it comes to enjoying the open water, a little preparation goes a long way. Keep these five foundational sea rules in mind before you dive in:

  1. Swim where there are lifeguards: Popular bays like Mellieħa Bay & Golden Bay are staffed through summer, offering an immediate safety net if you run into difficulty.
  2. Respect the flags: Red means stay out of the water, no matter how inviting it looks. Yellow typically indicates caution, while green signifies safe swimming conditions. Never second-guess a red flag.
  3. Check jellyfish reports before you swim: The mauve stinger drifts in with certain currents; a quick look at the local jellyfish tracking map or social media updates saves a painful afternoon & an emergency pharmacy run.
  4. Watch the wind: A strong north-westerly, the Majjistral, turns north-facing bays choppy while sheltered coves stay calm. Check the forecast & pick your bay to match the wind direction for a relaxing swim rather than a wrestling match with the waves.
  5. Never swim alone at quiet spots: Take a buddy, especially when snorkelling or exploring secluded rocky inlets where currents can unexpectedly shift.

The hazards don’t stop at the water’s edge. The intense Mediterranean sun & rugged terrain demand extra precautions while you are lounging on the shore:

  1. Avoid the peak sun: From late morning to mid-afternoon, UV levels in a Maltese summer sit at the top of the scale. Seek shade, wear a wide-brimmed hat, apply high-SPF sunscreen generously, & repeat regularly.
  2. Drink more water than you think you need: The combination of high ambient heat, active swimming, & sea salt dehydrates your body much faster than you might realise. Keep a reusable water bottle filled at all times.
  3. Wear swim shoes on rocky coasts: Much of the stunning Maltese coastline is carved from dramatic limestone rock rather than soft sand, & spiky sea urchins are a common part of the underwater scenery. Swim shoes protect your feet from sharp edges & marine life alike.
  4. Give boats space: In busy bays during peak tourist season, watercraft traffic increases significantly. Always stay safely inside the marked swim zones & make yourself visible if you are out past the buoys.
  5. Know the number: For any medical crisis, distress at sea, or emergency on the sand, dial 112 immediately to reach local emergency services.

The sea here is warm from June right into October, peaking around the mid-twenties in late August. It is an aquatic playground that invites long, lazy afternoons, spectacular sunset swims, & unforgettable diving adventures. Treat it with respect, stay mindful of your surroundings, & it will reward you with the absolute best beach days the Mediterranean has to offer.
